I’ve never seen the movie The Big Lebowski (I know, shame on me) but this Charlotte neighborhood spot is just as cool as I imagine the movie should be. Lebowski’s is tucked away on East Boulevard in the same 2 blocks as JJ’s Red Hots, Tijuanna Flats, and Brixx Pizza. It’s a smaller restaurant with a bar that seats about 8 and a dog-friendly patio with great sight-seeing of East Blvd.
Lebowsi’s, which is owned by Buffalo, NY natives, is well known for their wings, Beef on Weck, White Russians, beer specials, and fun neighborhood atmosphere. I ventured in today for lunch but have been in several times in the past for drinks or lunch. Today I ordered the Beef on Weck with garlic fries. I had the pleasure of eating the Beef on Weck previously and ordered it again today knowing that it would be a sure thing.
The sandwich was as good as I remembered it the last time. The slow-roasted beef was super tender and piled high on the soft & fluffy “weck” bun (short for Kimmelweck) topped with carraway seeds and kosher salt. The sandwich in itself is delicious but even better when paired with Lebowski’s au jus or horsey sauce. You can’t go wrong here. Although the popular sandwich is on the pricey side ($8.95 for just the sandwich), it’s a very large portion.
The garlic fries were a nice surprise. Although they were a bit on the salty side, the seasoning was amazing. (Think Arby’s curly fries seasoning but way better.) Fries can often be boring when eating out but these were unique enough that they were anything but boring.
Speaking of sides… I couldn’t possibly do a review on Lebowski’s without mentioning their sweet potato tots. Listed on their menu as “spot tots”, they’re a must-order not necessarily because of the tots, but because of the sweet marscapone cheese dip that comes alongside the sweet potato treats. It’s hard to say what exactly is in the dip, but this stuff tastes almost exactly like cream cheese frosting. Oh, the humanity! Sweet tots & cream cheese frosting… It could be worse, right?! It may sound like an odd combination to you but from now on I don’t think I want to eat sweet potato anything without this dip. It’s sinfully delicious.
Anyway, back to today’s review… The service was, and always is, excellent at Lebowski’s. My server today was very friendly and willing to answer any questsions and refilled drinks before they were empty. I even checked into Lebowskis’s on Yelp as I sat down to order and upon checking in, I unlocked a “Free Side With Any Sandwich” offer, which was an awesome bonus! Therefore, my awesome garlic fries were free. Oh hell yeah.
(Sidenote: If you are not a Yelp user yet, I don’t know if we can be friends. Yelp is the ultimate app for foodies to discover, review and rate restaurants and businesses as well as receive special promotions and offers. The Yelp Charlotte community is quickly growing and if you’re someone who loves food, it’s something that you’ll definitely want to look into!)
All in all, today’s lunch at Lebowski’s was a great success. It’s been a while since I’ve had their wings and since that’s usually the first thing I hear when folks mention this neighborhood bar, I might just have to make a return trip just for them. Or maybe for their buffalo nachos… Or haddock tacos… Or sliders… Or the Fredonia Dip…
