Back in August we wrote about an unexpected, perhaps temporary, closing of The Penguin, a diner that’s been a staple in the Plaza Midwood area for 60 years. For months, Charlotte residents wondered if The Penguin would open their doors once again but just yesterday the owners received an eviction notice so there’s no hope for those who had their fingers crossed for the restaurant’s return.
The Penguin, which was known for its burgers, hot dogs and fried pickles, opened in 1954 and has been featured on Travel Channel’s “Man V. Food” and even made an appearance in Johnny Knoxville’s movie “Bad Grandpa”. Most say the quality of the food and restaurant suffered when 2 of the original owners were “forced out” of the business in 2010. They later went on to open The Diamond restaurant just a block away from The Penguin.
What’s your take on the closing of The Penguin? Will they be missed or is the restaurant’s closing long overdue?
