I just got back from having lunch at Owen’s Bagel and I’m very ashamed to admit that today was my first time going. Ever. I’ve lived in Charlotte almost 8 years and just walked into Owen’s Bagel for the first time today. Shameful. In my defense, though, they used to be closed on Mondays which seemed to be the day I used to always try to go in the past but obviously with no luck.
Today, though, was a success. I walked in about 15 minutes before closing. They close at 2pm on Mondays and 3pm every other day. When it was time for me today, I was a little overwhelmed by the size of the menu. There are dozens of different bagel sandwiches to choose from with everything from a classic BLT bagel to a breakfast bagel sandwich called the “Hangover Helper” with ham, egg, and cheddar on an onion bagel. Most of their sandwiches have pretty funny names. I ordered the “Tonya Harding Club” with turkey, ham, colby, and swiss on a sesame bagel. Orders are placed with a cashier at the back of the store. You can choose from the many specialty sandwiches on the menu or create your own by selecting different meats, cheese, veggies, bagel type, etc.
The bagel sandwich I ordered was warm and cheesy. The cheese was thoroughly melted and reminded me of a hot Ham and Swiss. The bagel was deliciously chewy with just the right amount of sesame seeds. In hindsight, I would have maybe tried the sandwich with lettuce and tomato so next time I’ll be sure to add veggies to balance out the warm gooiness of the cheese.
The woman working the cash register today was super friendly and helped me to decipher the menu and also gave me a a rewards card (Buy 10, Get one free). I also checked in on Yelp using the mobile app and received a free soda fountain drink. Score!
After finally visiting Owen’s Bagel, I think this spot is an awesome place for a quick, tasty and inexpensive breakfast or lunch. If you’re ever in Southend, stop by to choose a bagel sandwich (or wrap) from their huge menu for under $10. I’ll definitely be in more often now that I’ve had my first taste!
