The Penguin restaurant in Plaza Midwood has now been closed for two weeks with the owner initially stating that the reason for the restaurant’s closing was due to a staff member having to travel because of a death in the family. 2 weeks later, The Penguin owners face eviction due to non-payment of rent to the tune of $17,579.46. The Penguin has 10 days to file an appeal on the eviction. FYI, The Penguin’s monthy rent is $4,500, which puts them behind by almost 4 months.
There have been rumors circulating over the last few months that The Penguin has had troubles keeping the restaurant afloat. The restaurant owners also filed for bankruptcy just last year. Most Charlotte residents believe that since the original owners were nearly forced out of the building 4 years ago by the building’s owners, The Penguin has since not been the same. The original owners created The Diamond restaurant just a block away from the original Penguin restaurant after negotiations could not be met in 2010.
One would say that at this rate, The Penguin will not reopen and will be forced to close it’s doors after 60 years. We’ll keep you updated on the situation as more unfolds.
What’s your take on this? Will you miss The Penguin? Or do you think it’s time for the drive-in restaurant to end an era?
